2009 Ultimate Battletop Championship: Wisconsin

There will be two rounds in the contest: The Long-Spin round, and the Death and Destruction round. All the points will be added together to determine the winner.

Long-Spin round:

  • Everyone throws at the same time.
  • Your top must spin in the arena to get any points.
  • 1 pt: knock a top out or hit mid-air so that it doesn't enter the arena.
  • The last top to stop spinning gets the same number of points as there are players, second gets one point less and so on. The first top to stop spinning gets the fewest points. So if 4 tops were spinning in the arena, and there were 5 players, the first one to stop would get 2 points, the next to stop would get 3 points and so on. The last one to stop spinning would get 5 points.
  • We will decide what score to play up to at the start of the game. Usually the number of players times 3 is a good choice, and the preferred maximum number of players is 5 per group. If more than 5 players enter the contest we will have multiple groups play, and every group must have the same number of players.
  • In the Long-Spin round, the first person in each group to get to the pre-determined number of points (usually 15) stops that round for that group, and the group moves on to the Death and Destruction round.

Death & Destruction round:

  • One player throws their top in the arena as a target, and then everyone else takes turns trying to maim it. You rotate who starts until each person has been The Chump once.
  • The Death and Destruction round ends when each player has been The Chump (the first thrower) once. At that point, the person with the highest combined score from both rounds wins, and the winner gets the fabulous trophy.

Here's the scoring for this round:

  • 1 pt: throw top into arena, it bounces out & hits another contestant
  • 2 pts: knock a top out of the arena, additional point if your top stays in the arena
  • 3 pts: dent another top
  • 4 pts: dent another top's bottlecap
  • 5 pts: break, or break off a piece of another top, including knocking off the bottlecap

Disputes or close finishes settled by rock, paper, scissors.

You have to use an official Ultimate Battletop Championship top for the contest, and Alan Gray will have them for sale for a very reasonable price. They are designed to have a bottlecap snapped on the crown, so bring your favorite bottlecap with you or find one at the contest. Alan should have a plethora of cool caps if you need one. If you have an official battletop from Alan from a previous contest, it can be used in this and any future contests. Painting or tip sharpening/dulling are the only modifications allowed. Top must have a bottle cap installed in order to compete.

We will need a score-keeper who is not a contestant, so if anyone knows someone willing to do it please let me know.
